What Kind of Truck Insurance does a FedEx Owner Operator need?
If you’re an Owner Operator leased to FedEx Custom Critical, you’ll need to provide your own $1,000,000 Non-Trucking Liability (NTL) insurance.
FedEx CC insures you for the Primary Liability insurance when you are operating on their behalf.
NTL–Non Trucking Liability protects you when you’re NOT operating for the benefit of FedEx Custom Critical.
Coverage can be tricky, so here’s a fun quick video on what Non Trucking Liability does and doesn’t cover.

Do FedEx Owner Operators need Physical Damage Insurance?
Yes, Owner Operators by definition own their own equipment and are responsible for insuring the value of that equipment.
By “equipment”, that means a tractor, straight truck or sprinter van.
Physical Damage Insurance provides both Comprehensive and Collision coverage for your vehicle.
Collision coverage is for a collision or a rollover, Comp takes care of nearly everything else like theft, fire, vandalism, animal hits etc.
Where do FedEx Owner Operators get NTL and Physical Damage Coverage?
FedEx offers an in-house insurance plan that you can set up for automatic settlement deductions which is very convenient.
As an Owner Operator, you’re not considered an employee but an independent contractor with 1099 status.
That means you’re free to shop around and find insurance coverage outside of the in-house plan.
It’s a good idea to compare.
Sometimes you can get better coverage with a lower premium on your own, and sometimes you can’t:)
What Insurance Companies Compete for FedEx Custom Owner Operators?
CIS offers Atlantic Specialty as part of their exclusive FedEx CC program, making it easy for Owner Operators to get a second opinion on their truck insurance.
CIS also offers GEICO and Progressive for both NTL and Physical Damage coverage with competitive personalized rates.
How Much is Atlantic Specialty Insurance?
CIS–Atlantic Specialty’s exclusive Non-Trucking Liability (NTL) $1,000,000 coverage for FedEx Owner Operators varies between $27-60 per month.
The exact cost depends on how much UM/UIM/PIP coverage you choose–most Owner Ops choose the state minimum for $29.44 per month.
For Physical Damage coverage, premiums range from 2% to 3.22% per thousand, based on the deductible you pick.
Deductibles are flexible, starting at $500 and going up to $2,500 per loss.
Guys, it only takes a few minutes and costs you nothing to compare your options to see how much you would save over the inhouse plan!
What extras does Atlantic Specialty offer?
- Extended Repair Time Coverage (Downtime): It’s included at no extra cost.
- Truck Rental Reimbursement: Get up to $1400 for 14 days—regardless of your fleet availability.
- Windshield Repairs: Got a crack under 6 inches? They’ll fix it for free.
- Towing & Storage: $10,000 limit, unlike others who use “Reasonable & Customary” (which can leave you hanging).
- Diminishing Deductible: Each year a unit is claim-free, the deductible drops by 25%. Plus, one claim won’t affect the whole fleet.
Simple, clear, and designed to work in your favor!
