CIS is a 5-Star independent Commercial Truck Insurance Agency helping small, family truckers nationwide since 2002.
Keep reading to learn about updates to Progressive’s Commercial Truck program, including new underwriting rules.
(We’ll also share a couple of easy tips to get a lower trucking insurance quote.)
Does Progressive Insure Brand New Truckers?
Yes, Progressive has always been one of the few companies that’ll cover brand new truckers looking for commercial truck insurance.
More competition from GEICO means better premiums for new start ups as well as established companies.
That’s where the Independent Transportation Insurance Experts at CIS swoop in for free.
We run apples-to-apples comparisons for your new business and at every renewal.
Can Progressive help a new DOT Motor Carrier Authority
Yes, Progressive works directly with FMCSA to process your new DOT Federal Filings automatically.
First give us a call at CIS to chat and get a ballpark on your trucking insurance.
Look, there’s no point moving forward if the premium estimate comes back beyond your budget.
Then follow these easy steps in How to Get a Motor Carrier Authority, courtesy of CIS.
While Progressive handles the actual filings, CIS is here to guide you through the entire process, with no extra fees, ever.
Can a New Start Up get Affordable Truck Insurance
Yes, if your credit is good, a new motor carrier or artisan contractor can get affordable insurance with Progressive.
They remain the most affordable nationwide for artisan contractors and also larger trucks or tractors.
If you’re insuring a commercial van for any purpose, Progressive and GEICO are pretty evenly matched on liability and cargo.
Some states vary dramatically between the two companies, so get a comparison every time.
If neither company fits your budget, at least you’ll know before you spend time and money on a project that may not pan out.
At CIS, we believe in being upfront.
If your premium is unaffordable right now, we’ll help you come up with a plan B…like working for another company until you get your ducks in a row.

Does a Progressive policy include Financed Value coverage
Yes, Financed Value coverage is a neat little perk that’s automatically included in your Progressive Commercial Truck Insurance Policy.
So, what does it do? It covers the gap between your truck’s actual cash value and the amount you still owe on your loan.
This means if you’re in an accident and find yourself “upside down” on your loan, this coverage helps you get out from under it.
Can Progressive limit the number of trucks on your policy
Yes, if you’re a new Progressive policyholder, you can only add two trucks within a six-month period.
This underwriting rule is part of a larger effort to crack down on “chameleon carriers.”
All insurance providers are working to keep questionable operators out of the trucking industry.
You can learn more at GEICO vs Progressive Commercial Truck Rapid Growth Rules.
Also, keep in mind that rapidly growing your existing company from a few trucks to 10 or more isn’t recommended.
This kind of quick expansion is sure to get an extra look from Progressive’s small fleet underwriting team.
Does Progressive insure Small Fleets
Yes, Progressive is a great option for small fleets of 10 or more trucks, and is quite competitive right now.
Underwriting is a little different, but CIS takes care of the tricky stuff for you:)
To start a small fleet submission you’ll need:
- At least three years of loss experience runs
- Proof of continuous insurance coverage for that corresponding period
Progressive will not renew your policy if your company grows beyond 60 vehicles because their platform can’t support medium-sized fleets.

Why Do Progressive Truck Quotes Vary?
It all starts with your state’s base premiums, and then a bunch of personal factors come into play, like:
- Insurance Credit Rating: Remember credit is King. If you’ve got a history of late payments or debt, your premium will be higher.
- Year and Value of Your Truck: Newer, high-value vehicles cost more to repair or replace, which means higher Physical Damage premiums.
- Driver’s History and Experience: Clean record and an experienced driver? You’ll will likely pay much less…assuming your credit is good.
- Radius of Operation: Unlimited radius? You’ll pay more than someone with a 200 mile radius, but on the flip side some Last Mile Delivery drivers in major cities come in high as well.
- Cargo: Hauling refrigerated freight (REEFER) or high-value goods? That’ll bump up your Motor Truck Cargo Premium due to higher risk exposure.
2 Tips for a lower Progressive Trucking Insurance Quote
1. Choose Telematics
- If you’re driving a Commercial Van like a Cargo Van or Sprinter, you should check out Snap Shot ProView. It’s perfect for vehicles that don’t need ELDs. On average, new customers save 10% right off the bat, and some see another 5% to 8% savings at renewal, some even save up to 20% total! If you’re a safe driver who avoids hard starts and stops, this is definitely worth a look. And even if your driving isn’t the smoothest, you still lock in those initial savings for your policy term.
- If you’re driving something big like a tractor that requires Primary Commercial Auto Liability and an ELD that tracks your hours anyway, be sure to include Smart Haul in your Commercial Truck Insurance Progressive quote. If you’re using a preferred ELD vendor, you’ll get at least a 5% discount. With a solid safety record, you could save up to 20%. Progressive’s partner vendors include Motive (formerly KeepTruckin), Geotab, and Omnitracs, where you’ll likely see the biggest savings. But even if you don’t use one of their preferred vendors, you’ll still get at least a 3% discount just for enrolling in Smart Haul.
2. Set up your payments on EFT or Pay in Full
- Set up your payments on EFT (Electronic Funds Transfer) so your monthly premium gets paid automatically. Let’s face it, it’s easy to forget a bill when you’re always on the road. It’s a safer way to pay and you’ll get a 2-5% discount on your Liability and 5-7% on your Physical Damage premium. It’s a no-brainer, guys!
- If you’ve got some extra cash then let it work for you. Take advantage of a Paid In Full Discount and save up to 17% on annual policies or 13% on six-month policies. Do the math to see if it’s worth it.
Discounts and features like savings and coverage might vary slightly depending on your state, but they’re all great options.
