I’ve written before on choices Owner Operator Independent Contractors have in purchasing “In-House” insurance coverage through their Motor Carrier, “Independent” insurance plans on their own or “Association” insurance programs.
There’s a new association program on the block which is currently exclusive to FedEx Independent Contractors.
It offers some great rates and coverage for Independent Contractors of all types of units hauling for FedEx Custom Critical, FedEx Ground and FedEx Home Delivery.
Non-Trucking Liability is between $27 – $36 per month for $1 Million Liability per unit.
Physical Damage (Comp & Collision) averaging between 2.01% – 2.42% annual rate per unit.
Downtime is included in the rate at $125/day for a maximum of 30 days.
It’s written on the ISO Business Auto Policy Form with standard exclusions such as racing or speeding contests. It includes some nice endorsement options such as Personal Effects and Tarps & Chains.
(Other bells & whistles are offered, but this blog is intended to simply notify everyone of this new insurance option in our marketplace.)
Over the past few months we’ve tested this new program here at CIS, and we’re pleased with its ease of use and claims response for our insureds.
The rates are attractive because FedEx already does a great job of vetting all of their drivers, greatly reducing the underwriting obligation inherent in truck insurance.
As CIS brings more FedEx Owner Independent Contractors into this program, I hope to encourage an expansion to other Owner Operators hauling for quality Motor Carriers.
Thankfully the economy is continuing to improve so insurance companies will likely test the waters on different ventures. My goal for 2018 is to help illustrate to them that Professional Owner Operators in all types of trucking are still a good risk.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year Everyone!
